A Different Day a Different Stain
Here’s a tip for another homemade cleaning solution, this one has a few variations for different calibers of stains.
Light Stains: Dissolve 2 tablespoos of salt in 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Use the solution on the stain, let it dry, then vacuum.
Larger/Darker Stains: Use the same solution as “Light Stains” but add 2 tablespoons of borax to the mixture. Pour on stain, let dry, vacuum.
Tough/Ground-in Stains: Make a paste of 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Rub the paste into the stain using a dry cloth, let it set for TWO days, then vacuum.

Too Much Cleaner and The Unwanted Carpet Remodel
Now I know you REALLY want to clean up that stain before it sets, but remember not to get too hasty! Many people make the mistake of going way overkill on detergent. You spill something, run and grab the detergent, glug glug glug, scrub scrub scrub, and when you are done the stain is gone, but it’s replaced by residual soap which can be just as bad.
When using a cleaner that you are unfamiliar with, make sure you test it in an inconspicuous spot (closet etc..) as some detergents may cause discoloration of the carpet.

A homemade carpet cleaner can be made from clear household ammonia.

Do not over saturate the carpet or you’ll get the carpet backing wet underneath.
